Quick thinkers, think quick

Quick lateral thinking question – what’s next in this sequence and why. Hint: It’s not the Fibonacci one!

1; 1 1 ; 2 1 ; 1 2 1 1 ; 1 1 1 2 2 1 ; 3 1 2 2 1 1 ; 1 3 1 1 2 2 2 1.

It’s a tough one. Answers in the comments section please. If you’re the first one to get it right and you’re in Toronto at Third Tuesday tomorrow night, I’ll buy you a beer.

*Update* Congrats to the extremely intelligent Jill Pyle who got the answer completely right to this little poser. Looks like I owe her a beer, or whatever her favourite poison is, when I finally get to this fine nation’s capital. Feedreaders, click here to find out the answer.

  1. Jill Pyle says:

Each new number in the sequence describes the one before it.
    1; 1 1 ; 2 1 ; 1 2 1 1 ; 1 1 1 2 2 1 ; 3 1 2 2 1 1 ; 1 3 1 1 2 2 2 1

    eg: 312211 = one 3, 1 one, 2 twos, 2 ones
